“Always trust a microbiologist because they have the best chance of predicting when the world will end.” ― Teddie O. Rahube

I have a confession. The sort of confession that will render me forever a nerd in your eyes. I am in love with Microbe Invader. Before you judge, give me a chance to explain myself.

microbe invaderThe best way to describe the game is: Pokemon for microbiologists. Your character is a medical student new to the Infectious Disease team. Under the tutelage of Dr. Taylor, your attending, your character makes efforts to diagnose patients and treat their infectious diseases.

battleSharon Pizzabreath (I love the names!) is fighting an E. coli infection. With the assistance of pharmaceuticals, your character is able to treat the diseases  and earn  badges. Honestly, it’s a really cool game and it is sucking up a large chunk of my time–thank goodness it’s summer!

The world of microbiology is quite beautiful, but I may be biased because I find infectious diseases extremely fascinated. Nonetheless, the game is extremely informative–perhaps good preparation for Step 1?–but it’s actually a lot of fun. Perhaps too much fun. Seriously, I need to dial back. Try it out and let me know what you think in the comment box below.

“Before you speak-ask yourself: Is it kind, is it necessary, is it true, does it improve upon the silence?”― Shirdi Sai Baba

I mentioned in a previous post that I am enrolled in courses for an MPH. As you readers know, I am a candidate for the MD/MPH dual degree. And so, I’m easing into the MPH coursework. In order to: get use to New Orleans before medical school; keep my mind active; make my life easier down the road. I intend to concentrate in Tropical Medicine and so my required coursework is as follows:

“I am learning all the time. The tombstone will be my diploma.” ― Eartha Kitt

I graduated, three days ago. Wow. It’s so surreal and it hasn’t entirely kicked in just yet. I mentioned previously that my sister and my best friend flew into New Jersey to celebrate my birthday prior to graduation shenanigans. Before I get sentimental about graduation and Princeton, I want to describe the whirlwind of events.

“Let go of the idea of what is normal, and go live your life the way you really want it to live.” ― Shanti

Today I am 22. That is so weird to write. In the time between when I slept and when I awoke (not too long ago), I became 22. Wow.  Of course, this is not original at all, but I started my morning with (1) a flurry of text messages about my sister’s and friend’s airline struggles and (2) Taylor Swift. The Taylor Swift bit is the unoriginal aspect of this morning.

I like to treat my birthdays like New Year’s Day. I made birthday resolutions or goal posts for emotional, spiritual, and physical growth. In addition, I tend to make lists of what I have learned over the past year of my life. Today, I’m going to share with you my list, some of my goals for the next year of my life, and my plans for the day!

“Through humor, you can soften some of the worst blows that life delivers. And once you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be, you can survive it.” ― Bill Cosby

I like to think of humor as the best sort of medicine. Whenever I’m having a hectic or pretty dreary day, I look up parodies made by medical school students. I find it heartening that there is a collective sense of humor in the almost doctor community. Below are my favorite medical school parodies. Also, I just stumbled upon the Medical Emmys (Memmys)! What a wonderful world!
